Stamford Apple Day 2008, Stamford Arts Centre, 4th October 2008 - more details
Stamford is a market town in the county of Lincolnshire, England. It has been declared the "finest stone Georgian town in England" and has been used as a location for many films and television series, including the recent "Pride and Prejudice" film and the "Middlemarch" series.
As well as being a wonderful town to live in and visit, in Victorian times the town was surrounded by orchards and nurseries growing apple and other fruit trees. Over 40 apple varieties were bred here, but with the passing of time many of these have been lost. With the development of the town and the change in farming practices, most of the old orchards have now disappeared, although some remnants are still visible in the gardens of newly built houses.
